CDC study on medical debt in America is released

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released the results of a survey conducted by its National Center for Health Statistics. Those who administered the survey and analyzed its results are not concerned with the prevalence of a particular disease nor are they concerned with how a particular disease is spread. Instead, the experts conducting this survey are concerned about the rise of medical debt in America.

It is interesting that the CDC would take on such a project, though when one stops to think about it, the aims of the survey are not really so odd. Study after study has confirmed that when individuals in poor health are saddled with significant medical debt, the stress that results from this debt may inhibit their ability to recover as fully or as quickly as they otherwise might.

Therefore, it must have been disconcerting to the CDC that the survey reveals that over 25 percent of American families experienced trouble paying their medical bills during 2012. The survey also indicates that families with minor children and families who are not well-off financially tend to suffer the most significant financial strain when medical bills begin to pile up.

Because overwhelming medical debt can inhibit the ability of individuals to rest and recover fully from injury and illness, it is important that you take what actions you can to mitigate your debt once it starts to spiral out of control. Please do not hesitate to speak to an experienced bankruptcy and debt relief attorney if you have questions about mounting medical debt.
